It\u00a0starts\u00a0with a\u00a0first\u00a0experience\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

For many of the 235 participants in the VR Care pilot, this was their very first time putting on a VR headset. Coming from\u00a0Finland,\u00a0Denmark,\u00a0Ireland, Spain,\u00a0Greece\u00a0and\u00a0Cyprus, they stepped into something unfamiliar,\u00a0unsure of what to expect, but curious about what it might offer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

What followed was not just a demonstration of\u00a0new technology, but an experience that felt surprisingly real.\u00a0\u201cYou feel inside the situation they are putting you in,\u201d one participant reflected.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This reaction was not unusual.\u00a0Again and again, participants described the same moment of transition\u00a0\u2013 from observer to participant, from watching to experiencing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

At the heart of this experience is\u00a0VRCare, an Erasmus+ KA220 project co-funded by the European Union through the Finnish National Agency EDUFI. The project\u00a0represents\u00a0an innovative approach in which teachers and healthcare practitioners co-create real-life scenarios that are brought into virtual reality, particularly in the fields of childcare and elderly care. Moving beyond traditional teaching methods,\u00a0VRCare\u00a0offers immersive, interactive, and ethically grounded learning experiences that enhance engagement, stimulate reflection, and deepen practical understanding.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

When\u00a0learning\u00a0stops\u00a0being\u00a0theoretical<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In traditional learning environments,\u00a0difficult situations\u00a0are often discussed,\u00a0analysed, and reflected upon from a distance. In VR, something different happens. The learner is no longer outside the situation\u2014they are in it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In the\u00a0VRCare\u00a0pilots, participants found themselves standing in care settings, navigating conversations, making decisions, and responding in real time.\u00a0Scenarios around\u00a0childcare, elderly care and ethical challenges became more than examples,\u00a0they became experiences.\u00a0\u201cIt feels more real than just discussing situations,\u201d one participant noted.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This shift matters. When learning becomes experiential, it becomes memorable. It becomes personal. And most importantly, it becomes transferable to real-world practice.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A\u00a0space\u00a0where\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0safe to\u00a0learn<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

One of the most powerful aspects of the VR\u00a0pilots\u00a0was something simple but essential: the freedom to make mistakes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Participants repeatedly highlighted how valuable it was to\u00a0practise\u00a0in a safe environment, especially when dealing with sensitive or complex situations. Whether navigating end-of-life care or managing challenging\u00a0behaviour, the scenarios allowed them to try, reflect, and try again\u00a0\u2013 without real-world consequences.\u00a0\u201cI enjoyed that I could\u00a0practise\u00a0safely without worrying about making a mistake,\u201d one learner shared.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For\u00a0the\u00a0students, teachers and caregivers, this sense of safety is not just reassuring,\u00a0it is what makes deeper learning possible.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Confidence\u00a0begins\u00a0before the\u00a0real\u00a0world<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As participants moved through the scenarios, something else began to\u00a0emerge:\u00a0confidence.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Not the confidence that comes from theory alone, but the kind that develops through experience. The kind that grows when you have already faced a situation,\u00a0albeit virtually,\u00a0and worked through how to respond.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cVR is an excellent way to build confidence before real-world practice,\u201d one participant explained.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For teachers, this opens new possibilities in preparing students. For\u00a0students, it offers a way to strengthen skills before stepping into complex, real-life situations.\u00a0For\u00a0care-givers, it gave them an opportunity to\u00a0review and re-think their actions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Designed\u00a0together\u00a0\u2013 Learned\u00a0together<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

What makes the VR\u00a0care scenarios developed within the Erasmus+ KA220 project\u00a0particularly meaningful is how\u00a0the VR scenarios\u00a0were\u00a0created\u00a0and piloted. These\u00a0are\u00a0not scenarios designed in isolation, but developed\u00a0and piloted\u00a0in collaboration with\u00a0students,\u00a0teachers\u00a0and healthcare practitioners,\u00a0many of whom were new to VR themselves.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This shared starting point shaped the process. It meant that the pilot was not just about testing scenarios, but about learning how to\u00a0create and improve\u00a0them\u00a0\u2013 together.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In this context, the feedback from participants became essential. The insights gathered across countries helped\u00a0identify\u00a0what works, what resonates, and what can be strengthened.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The contribution from Denmark, in particular, stood\u00a0out. With more familiarity with VR, Danish participants offered detailed and constructive suggestions that\u00a0will be\u00a0invaluable in refining the scenarios. Their input helps\u00a0bridge the gap between first experimentation and future development.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

What\u00a0we\u00a0learned\u00a0along the\u00a0way<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Perhaps one\u00a0of the most important insights from the pilot is this: immersive learning does not require prior experience to be effective.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Even those completely new to VR were able to engage quickly and meaningfully. The technology, when thoughtfully designed, did not become a barrier\u00a0\u2013\u00a0it became a bridge.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Participants\u00a0in the pilots\u00a0also showed clearly that immersion matters. The more realistic and engaging the experience, the more impactful the learning. When learners feel present, they respond more naturally, reflect more deeply, and remember more clearly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

And there was another message, repeated in\u00a0different ways\u00a0across responses: this should not be a one-off experience. There is a clear appetite for more:\u00a0more scenarios, more opportunities, more integration into everyday learning and training.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Looking\u00a0ahead:\u00a0deepening the\u00a0experience<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The next step is not to start over, but to build on what has already been learned.\u00a0Our next\u00a0six\u00a0scenarios, that will be piloted in November \u2013 December 2026\u00a0will aim to deepen the sense of participation, allowing users to take a more active role in shaping outcomes. Interactions will become more natural, experiences more dynamic, and scenarios more varied.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

At the same time, one thing will remain central: accessibility. The experience must continue to work not only for experienced users, but for those putting on a VR headset for the very first time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A\u00a0glimpse of the\u00a0future of\u00a0learning<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The\u00a0VRCare\u00a0pilot offered\u00a0a glimpse into what learning can become.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

It showed\u00a0that training does not have to be confined to classrooms or textbooks. It can be immersive, experiential, and deeply engaging\u00a0and fun. It can allow learners to step into situations, to feel them, to respond to them,\u00a0and to carry that understanding forward into real life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Most importantly, it shows that meaningful innovation does not happen in isolation.
